DIVINE CALLING
2025
Oil Painting
300mm (W) x 450mm (HT)
This artwork is a contemplative reinterpretation, inspired by my reflections on The Dream of St Joseph, a 17th-century painting by Francisco Rizi. It reflects the silent fiat of St Joseph and the faithful surrender of Mother Mary, each offering a profound “yes” to the mystery of divine calling.
In the foreground, St Joseph’s quiet strength stirs within the stillness of his dream, as the divine call begins to unfold. He doesn't respond with fear, but with trust. In a reflection of that same faith, Mary is drawn kneeling instead of standing, embodying her own fiat, offering unwavering consent to God’s will despite the mystery that surrounds her.
This artwork is a personal prayer and an intimate reflection on the courage it takes to trust and say “yes” when the path ahead is uncertain. It invites us to place our faith and confidence in God’s providence. As you contemplate this scene and the angel’s words: “Do not be afraid” (Matthew 1:20), how might the Lord be inviting you to respond with faith today?
